Trama

Data Stellare 5630.7: L'Enterprise ha il compito di riportare l'ambasciatore medusano Kolos sul proprio pianeta d'origine. Lo accompagnano la dottoressa Miranda Jones, una telepate, e l'ingegnere Lawrence Marvick. I medusani hanno la particolarità di rendere pazzo ogni uomo che li veda direttamente e Spock, in una situazione di emergenza, guarda direttamente Kolos senza l'adeguata protezione.

• Il simbolo dell'IDIC indossato da Spock è stato disegnato da Gene Roddenberry e da William Ware Theiss ed è stato poi adottato come simbolo dei Vulcaniani. Robert Justman insiste che l'acronimo significa «Incredible Detail, Incredible Confusion», una frase che rappresenta una delle pietre angolari della sua filosofia.
• Il titolo originale dell'episodio deriva da Jordan di George Herbert, un poeta religioso del XVII secolo:
  «Who says that fictions only and false hair become a verse?
  Is there in truth no beauty?»

• A [T:13:07] Kirk vuota il bicchiere di brandy e subito dopo [T:13:15] lo posa ancora pieno.

YATI

• Alla fine Spock teletrasporta l'ambasciatore e la dottoressa Jones, ma non indossa la visiera durante l'operazione di teletrasporto, come era successo all'inizio dell'episodio. Nella stessa scena, Kirk è rimasto in sala teletrasporto, mentre all'inizio avevano lasciato Spock da solo.
