Trama

Data Stellare 4768.3: Rispondendo a un misterioso SOS da Arret, un pianeta ritenuto morto, Kirk, McCoy e la dottoressa Ann Mulhall vengono trasportati sottoterra. Tre alieni, Sargon, Henoch e Thalassa, le cui menti sono depositate in tre sfere hanno bisogno di corpi in prestito con cui costruire tre androidi nei quali si trasferiranno definitivamente.

• L'autore dello script originale è John T. Dugan, ma a causa dei cambiamenti apportati, nei credit gli è stata riconosciuta la sola storia e l'autore ha preferito quindi usare uno pseudonimo. Anni dopo, nell'edizione in VHS, sulla copertina il suo pseudonimo è stato rimosso del tutto e sostituito dal nome di Roddenberry: dopo un breve contenzioso con la Paramount, risolto al di fuori dal tribunale (anche perché Dugan, nel frattempo, si era ammalato di cancro), la copertina è stata rifatta e Dugan è stato risarcito.
