Trama

Data Stellare 42695.3: L'Enterprise sta entrando nel settore Selcundi Drema. Uno dei pianeti del sistema, Drema IV, è sull'orlo di un cambiamento geologico molto interessante e, durante una riunione degli ufficiali superiori, Riker domanda a Picard se Wesley non possa, per la prima volta, essere responsabile di una squadra di osservazione sulla superficie del pianeta. Data intanto sta riprogrammando i sensori in modo da allargare il loro raggio operativo e, mentre sta provando le nuove possibilità di rilevamento, capta un segnale a bassa frequenza: una giovane voce femminile che chiede se ci sia qualcuno là fuori.

In questo episodio...

Viene affidato al facente funzioni di Guardiamarina Wesley Crusher il suo primo incarico di comando di una perizia mineraria planetaria di un pianeta nel settore Selcundi Drema.
Picard ordina dell'earl grey.

Note

L'analizzatore spettrografico utilizzato nel laboratorio geologico non è opera di Sternbach, ma è l'oscillation overthruster usato in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eight Dimension.
L'idea della pietra che emette musica è di Melinda Snodgrass ed è ripresa da un suo romanzo, The Tears of Singers.
Nei dialoghi solo a Davies viene assegnato il nome, mentre il nome degli altri componenti del team di Wesley Crusher viene citato solamente nello script.

On location

La scena equestre dell'holodeck è stata girata in un ranch nei pressi di Thiusand Oaks, un sobborgo di Los Angeles. Questa è l'unica scena esterna girata nella seconda stagione della serie.

Quando Data riceve il segnale e lo amplifica, sulla pulsantiera a destra del monitor che visualizza una forma d'onda, c'è un 47 [T:12:32].
Una data stellare citata nell'episodio è 42741.3 [T:25:28].

YATI

A [T:08:00] Riker parla del «quadrante» Drema, invece di «settore».
Nel diario il Capitano dice che sono passate sei settimane da quando sono entrati nel sistema Selcundi Drema [T:13:57], ma quando Data gli riferisce delle sue trasmissioni con la bambina [T:16:02], dice che queste sono iniziate otto settimane prima, quando l'Enterprise era già nel sistema.
Se una ragazzina è in grado di creare una trasmittente che invia un segnale ricevibile da un'astronave, come mai gli abitanti del pianeta non hanno mai tentato di fare altrettanto, magari per chiedere aiuto?

        Picard crosses to the already saddled horse and strokes
        her neck, straightens the mane, scratches her neck.

                        Feels good, doesn't it? You're
                        a lovely darling.

        Picard mounts.

        Disappears into the trees.

        There is a flash of horse and rider through the trees.

        Picard rides toward the camera at the trot. He cues
        the horse and rocks into a canter.

        Cantering away from the camera, slowing to a walk.
        Picard leans forward and pats the horse on the neck.

        There should be no pass-by's because he is functionally
        on a treadmill; or, if there is a ride-by, the horse
        should be bent around Patrick's leg as if they are in
        an arena.

Durante la riunione degli ufficiali superiori nell'alloggio di Picard, alcuni dialoghi presenti nello script non compaiono nell'episodio. Le parti in grigio presenti nell'episodio, anche se nello script Data parla solamente di Sarjenka, mentre nell'episodio parla dei Dremani in generale:
