Trama

2152: Molto più in là di dove qualsiasi nave terrestre si è avventurata prima d'ora, l'equipaggio dell'Enterprise scopre con grande sorpresa una piccola navetta alla deriva che contiene apparentemente dei resti umani. Tucker e Reed scoprono che la navetta nasconde alcuni strani segreti e il mistero si infittisce quando i Sulibani si presentano rivendicando il diritto di proprietà della navetta. Come se non bastasse, Archer deve avere a che fare con i Tholiani che tentano di impadronirsi della navetta con la forza.

In questo episodio...

Debuttano i Tholiani in Enterprise.
L'Enterprise si trova a 100 anni luce dalla Terra.
Subito dopo aver trovato la navetta, Archer si chiede se il pilota non sia Zefram Cochrane, in quanto stava pilotando un vascello monoposto quando è scomparso e una delle voci che si sentivano all'epoca riguardava un vascello sperimentale a curvatura.

Note

Il passeggero della nave temporale ha una sequenza di nucleotidi particolari. È umano, ma con tratti di DNA vulcaniano, tarelliano, rigeliano e di altre razze.
Ad un certo punto, Tucker si pone la domanda «How could a ship be bigger on the inside than the outside?». Questa è esattamente la medesima frase utilizzata in Doctor Who quando un nuovo compagno si avventura all'interno della TARDIS.
Dopo aver portato a bordo la navetta aliena, Reed, T'Pol e Archer vanno vicino, la aprono ed entrano nella cabina senza nessuna protezione: se l'atmosfera fosse stata velenosa, loro l'avrebbero respirata senza nemmeno analizzarla.

Dopo che la nave sulibana si occulta, Mayweather dice di averla persa e tutti si rassegnano a non poterla rintracciare, ma l'Enterprise dispone ancora del dispositivo di rilevazione indicato da Daniels in Shockwave - Part I e avrebbero potuto almeno tentare di usarlo.

Quando Archer prende un dispositivo da un armadietto posto su un lato della stiva, sul mobile si vede chiaramente un exocomp di The Quality of Life sul primo ripiano [T:01:30].

Versione italiana

In occasione della prima trasmissione in Italia, questo episodio è stato trasmesso senza i titoli di coda ed è stato unito a Canamar. Tra i due episodi, oltre la pausa pubblicitaria è stato trasmesso un breve stacco che mostra l'Enterprise mentre entra in curvatura e il logo «Star Trek Enterprise» accompagnati da un jingle tratto dalla sigla di apertura.

T'Pol: A Vulcan cruiser. I don't recognize the configuration.
Archer: That's because it hasn't been built, yet.

T'Pol: Few Vulcans have ever chosen to mate with another species.
Archer: Worried about contaminating your genome with a little Human DNA?
T'Pol: There are significant biological differences between the species. It's unlikely we could reproduce.

Archer: If a Human and a Vulcan did have a child, I wonder if he do have pointed ears. [T:17.14]

Archer: What did he say?
Sato: I don't know. But I don't think he was paying you a compliment.

Phlox: Ah! The Vulcan Science Directorate. Hm, hm. Eh, they've always been rather... reluctant to embrace unorthodox ideas.

T'Pol: Are you saying you believe the time travel is possible?
Phlox: Surprises, Subcommander. I believe in embracing surprises.
T'Pol: I prefer to embrace logic. [T:22.36]

Tucker: All right, let's start re-initializing the power grid.
Reed: Assuming that is the power grid.

Trip: Some things are better left to mystery.
Reed: And you call yourself an explorer!
Trip: Where's the fun in exploring if you know how it all turns out? [T:23.46]

Tucker: Looks like they sent the whole kit and caboodle back to the thirty-first century!
T'Pol: There's no evidence to support that.
Tucker: ... Well, there's no evidence to contradict it, either.

Archer: You're forgetting that time is irrelevant to these people.

T'Pol: The High Command has asked me to prepare a report on this incident. With your permission.
Archer: By all means. I wonder if they'll believe that Humans and Vulcans will be swapping chromosomes one day.
T'Pol: They're more likely to believe in time travel. [T:41.23]
