Trama

2152: A causa della disputa sulla proprietà di un piccolo pianeta terraformato, le relazioni tra Andoriani e Vulcaniani si deteriorano al punto da sfociare in un conflitto armato. Nel mezzo della lotta, i Vulcaniani annunciano di voler trattare i termini di un cessate il fuoco con gli avversari, ma Shran dichiara che l'unico mediatore che potrebbe condurre i negoziati di cui ha fiducia è Jonathan Archer, che viene quindi chiamato a dirimere la disputa.

In questo episodio...

Si vede per la prima volta un'astronave andoriana.
Soval dice che ha servito con le forza di occupazione del pianeta Paan Mokar come ufficiale dei servizi segreti e ha negoziato l'accordo del 2097.
Lo stato di allarme rosso viene chiamato tactical alert e viene richiamato per la prima volta da Tucker.
Uno shuttlepod viene severamente danneggiato.
L'Enterprise ospita per la prima volta un negoziato diplomatico importante tra i Vulcaniani e Andoriani. Secondo Shran, il contributo di Archer e dell'Enterprise è stato cruciale alla buona riuscita della trattativa.

Note

Viste le dimensioni del pianeta terraformato, è abbastanza improbabile che possa generare una gravità simile ad 1g, in quanto la gravità è funzione della massa e il processo di terraforming agisce a livello molecolare, mantenendo, quindi, la medesima massa. Tuttavia, sarebbe possibile avere localmente una gravità normale utilizzando dei generatori nelle aree abitate.

Versione italiana

In occasione della prima trasmissione in Italia, questo episodio è stato trasmesso senza la sigla iniziale ed è stato unito a Stigma, privato dei titoli di coda. Tra i due episodi, oltre la pausa pubblicitaria è stato trasmesso un breve stacco che mostra l'Enterprise mentre entra in curvatura e il logo «Star Trek Enterprise» accompagnati da un jingle tratto dalla sigla di apertura.

Soval: Yes, Captain, I'm asking for your help.
Archer: I'll see what I can do!
Soval: Forgive my candor, but that's hardly reassuring. The last time you dealt with the Andorians, a Vulcan intelligence site was compromised and a priceless monastery destroyed. [T:06:48]

Archer: Maybe we're not out here to just scan comets and meet species. Maybe we're out here to prove that humanity is ready to join a much larger community. I intend to do that, whether the Vulcans like it or not. [T:08:56]

Archer: I imagined my first diplomatic mission would involve sitting around a big table, toasting with champagne, signing things with lots of pens.
Shran: The pinkskins' sense of humor. [T:13:14]

Archer: You claim the Andorians are inflexible. At least they're willing to sit down and talk.

T'Pol: ... 100 meters... 50. We need to reduce our speed.
Archer: Ground is gonna do that for us. Brace yourselves!

Tucker: We wanna be involved in any rescue operation.
Muroc: We have more experience in these matters.
Tucker: I know. I once saw one of your commando units blast the hell out of a rebel compound during a rescue mission.

Archer: For the record: the Vulcan High Command doesn't like me very much. And frankly the feeling is mutual. [T:15:49]

Soval: Didn't you hear the Captain? The ball is in our court. [T:18:42]

Soval: Are you that naive? Shran is using you!
Archer: This is a man who couldn't sleep because he thought he owed me something. I don't believe he asked me to come a dozen light years just so I could lead you into a trap. [T:22:57]

Archer: I'll take a look. Stay here.
T'Pol: Captain!
Archer: That's an order! No offense but my ears are less likely to draw fire than yours.
Soval: What is their fixation with our ears?
T'Pol: I believe they're envious.
Soval: You realize you picked up a slight Human accent? [T:27:04]

T'Pol: Just because Captain Archer has earned my respect, doesn't mean I've been contaminated by his emotions. [T:28:22]

Archer: Drop your weapon! I've never fired one of these before... I'm not sure if it's set on stun. T'Pol! Cease fire!
Tarah: It doesn't have a 'stun' setting.

Tucker: I'll open fire on any ship that makes an aggressive move. Phase cannons?
Reed: Locked and ready.
Muroc: This is not a Starfleet matter.
Tucker: As long as my Captain is stuck in the middle of your war zone, it is. [T:35:39]

Archer: I believe someone once defined a compromise as a solution that neither side is happy with.
Shran: In that case, these talks have been extremely successful...
Soval: I consider any negotiation that averts war to be a success.
Shran: Join me in a drink to celebrate our mutual dissatisfaction.
Soval: Vulcans don't drink. But this occasion merits an exception.
Shran: To the cease fire that wouldn't been possibile without the help of our human friends.
Soval: And to the successful continuation of these talks on Andoria.
Shran: I trust there'll be more accomplish than just talk. [T:39:54]

Soval: Captain. Your presence here... has not... been... overly meddlesome.
Shran: I think he likes you, pinkskin.
Archer: I wouldn't go that far. [T:41:22]
