Trama

14 Agosto 2152: L'Enterprise osserva da vicino un buco nero che è parte di un sistema stellare ternario, ma la vicinanza del corpo celeste provoca strani effetti sul comportamento dei membri dell'equipaggio.

In questo episodio...

• Viene implementata per la prima volta da Malcolm Reed la procedura dell'allarme rosso, che consiste nell'attivazione automatizzata dei sistemi offensivi e difensivi della nave una volta dichiarata la situazione d'emergenza. Archer chiede a Reed di renderla una procedura standard, ma di lavorare un po' sul suono dell'allarme.
• Il Capitano Archer fa aggiustare da Trip la sedia di comando. Anche Trip ha il suo bel da fare, perché poi gli vuole dare altre cose, come accedere ai dati tattici dal bracciolo. Trip dice che questo modello era lo stesso usato sui vascelli di classe Neptune, un vascello Warp 2. Voleva mettergli pure un micro smorzatore inerziale!
• Archer deve scrivere la prefazione alla biografia di suo padre Henry.
• Vediamo i fatti accaduti due giorni prima del 14.08.2152.

Versione italiana

• In occasione della prima trasmissione in Italia, questo episodio è stato trasmesso senza la sigla iniziale ed è stato unito a The Communicator, privato dei titoli di coda. Tra i due episodi, oltre la pausa pubblicitaria è stato trasmesso un breve stacco che mostra l'Enterprise mentre entra in curvatura e il logo «Star Trek Enterprise» accompagnati da un jingle tratto dalla sigla di apertura.
