Trama

Data Stellare 46379.1: Bajor, un pianeta in una zona di secondaria importanza, è stato sottratto dal dominio cardassiano dopo cinquanta anni di occupazione. Il Commander della Flotta Stellare Benjamin Sisko si appresta ad assumere il comando della ex stazione spaziale cardassiana Terok Nor, ribattezzata Deep Space Nine, nei pressi del pianeta, insieme al Maggiore Kira Nerys, che rappresenta il governo provvisorio bajoriano. Apparentemente, l'importanza strategica della stazione è trascurabile, ma ben presto si mettono in moto alcuni avvenimenti che potrebbero trasformare Deep Space Nine in un luogo di straordinaria importanza per tutto il settore.

In questo episodio...

• Sisko usa per la prima volta l'appellativo «old man» per riferirsi a Dax.
• Armin Shimerman utilizza il naso posticcio creato sulle dimensioni del naso di Max Grodénchik.

• Prima di attaccare la stazione, Gul Jasad, informato che i sensori hanno rilevato un armamento di 5.000 siluri fotonici, dice che probabilmente si tratta di un'illusione fatta di ombre di duranio. È la stessa frase che ripete il Generale Martok in The Way Of The Warrior, quando la flotta klingon sta per attaccare Deep Space Nine, questa volta però la stazione dispone veramente di 5.000 siluri fotonici.

• Le scene di Dax all'interno del wormhole sono state girate agli Huntington Gardens di San Marino, California. Il punto di vista di Sisko è stato girato nello stage 18 della Paramount.
• Le scene del diamante del campo da baseball sono state girate al Oak Grove Park di Pasadena.
• Le scene del picnic di Sisko e Jennifer sono state girate a nord di Newhall, California.

• Un Cardassiano dice a Gul Jasad del Settimo Ordine che il Quarto Ordine potrebbe arrivare in una giornata come rinforzo [T:1:18:43].

Blooper

• Quando la stazione subisce un paio di colpi dai Cardassiani, c'è una scena in cui delle travi di metallo rovinano su delle persone su una passatoia; successivamente una persona, scagliata in aria, atterra e schiaccia una di queste travi [T:1:20:18].
• Quando O'Brien lascia definitivamente l'Enterprise indossa l'uniforme con le spalle nere e il colletto rigido della terza stagione di The Next Generation, ma all'inizio dell'episodio si era visto O'Brien indossare l'uniforme con le spalle gialle e con la maglietta grigia sotto, tipica delle prime stagioni di Deep Space Nine e di Voyager.

Riciclati

• La navetta da lavoro con i bracci anteriori l'abbiamo già vista in Star Trek I.
• Questo episodio e Unity hanno in comune una scena di un cubo Borg che apre il fuoco contro una nave federale e ne squarcia a metà la sezione a disco.

DVD

• Durante la sigla della versione in DVD zona 2, in tutte le tracce audio tranne l'inglese si sente il rumore dell'apertura e della chiusura del wormhole, nonostante che nelle immagini della sigla del pilot non ci sia il wormhole [T:07:23].
• Nell'edizione europea in DVD questo episodio non è diviso in due parti.

Versione italiana

• Questo episodio è uscito in versione integrale in videocassetta nell'estate 1994 con il titolo Oltre l'ultima frontiera.
• Nella versione trasmessa da RAI2 manca la scena di Odo che rientra dall'astronave cardassiana. Inoltre, dal momento che l'episodio è stato trasmesso tutto insieme unendo le due parti, le scene con i titoli della seconda parte in sovrimpressione sono state sostituite montando delle scene di apertura e chiusura del wormhole.
• A [T:0:00:21] «escort us» è stato tradotto con «seguiteci».
• A [T:0:02:44] si sente un «mamma...» provenire da Jake fuori campo, ma nella versione originale Jake non parla perché, come si vede chiaramente prima e dopo, è privo di sensi.
• Anche a [T:0:03:47] nella versione italiana si sente la voce del piccolo Jake, ma nella versione originale il bambino non dice una parola.
• Jake si chiede come mai invece che su Bajor lui e il padre devono stare su una «piccola» stazione spaziale, ma nella versione originale si parla di «some old space station» [T:0:04:41].
• A [T:0:12:47] «sector A-14» diventa «settore 8-14».
• A [T:0:37:23] nella parte doppiata per il DVD O'Brien pronuncia OPS «o-pi-esse» invece del solito «sala comando». Inoltre nel doppiaggio italiano si perde il nome Maggie della Guardiamarina Hubble.
• A [T:0:37:30] nella parte doppiata per il DVD la frase di Picard «I understand that I just missed you on the bridge» è diventata «Se non sbaglio ci siamo visti prima in plancia», che è esattamente il contrario.
• All'uscita del wormhole nel quadrante Gamma, Dax dice che non rileva nessun pianeta di classe A, invece di classe M [T:0:47:48].
• A [T:0:47:53] viene persa l'informazione che Idran è un sistema ternario, ma viene detto solo che è un «sistema consistente in due stelle gemelle di classe O».
• O'Brien parla di «distorsione neutrina», anche se sarebbe più corretto «distorsione neutrinica». In originale è «neutrino disruption» [T:0:52:14].
• A [T:1:00:07] nella versione doppiata per il DVD viene utilizzato il termine «ammortizzatori inerziali» invece di «smorzatori inerziali».
• A [T:1:10:40] Kira parla di un campo di forza toroniano invece di toronico.
• A [T:1:16:42] e a [T:1:18:21] nella versione doppiata per il DVD si parla di campo toriano invece di campo toronico.
• «Aubergine stew» viene tradotto «stufato aubergine» anziché «stufato di melanzane».
• Quando parla con Gul Jasad Kira dice «Flotta Spaziale» invece di «Flotta Stellare». Nella versione in DVD questa scena è stata ridoppiata (si sente la voce differente) e l'errore è stato corretto.

        opens to reveal Sisko and Jake standing there... they ENTER...

                        Sorry about that, Commander...  all 
                        the interlock servos in this airlock 
                        were stripped by the Cardassians...

        He sticks out his hand to shake then realizes that it is 
        covered with sludge from the panel he was just in and pulls 
        it back...

                                        O'BRIEN
                        Miles O'Brien, your chief operations 
                        officer...

        Sisko is cordial... but throughout the first three acts, 
        there is a grudging subtext... he's doing his duty but he 
        doesn't want to be here.

                                        SISKO
                        We would've transported aboard if 
                        we'd known you were having problems, 
                        Chief...

        A Bajoran supernumerary manually closes the door behind them 
        as O'Brien leads them down the corridor...

                                        O'BRIEN
                        That wouldn't have been possible 
                        either, sir.  We've got some stray 
                        nucleonic emissions that have to be 
                        tracked down before we can safely 
                        reinstate transporter operations.  
                        It's a junkyard the bloody Cardies 
                        left us with, if you ask me...

24   INT. PROMENADE

        As they enter from the Airlock Gate... they react with shock 
        to what they see...  and we move with them to reveal our 
        first look at this extraordinary setting....

        The striking Cardassian/Bajoran architecture is mysterious 
        and impressive... and we can see how exciting a locale this 
        could once have been.  But now it is almost deserted... and 
        it has been ravaged by vandals... storefronts have been broken 
        out...  trash and broken stock from the stores litter the 
        thoroughfare... phaser blasts have burned scars on the 
        walls... a statue has been toppled...

25   SISKO

        reacts... his jaw tight... this is worse than he could have
        possibly imagined..
