Il suo vero nome è James Montgomery Doohan, è nato a Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, il 3 marzo 1920, deceduto il 20 luglio 2005 a Redmond, WA, USA.

Durante la battaglia del D-Day Doohan, arruolato nella Royal Canadian Artillery, ha perso il dito medio della mano destra. Nelle riprese di Star Trek, Doohan ha sempre cercato di nascondere la sua menomazione e per alcune scene in cui venivano inquadrate le sue mani sono state utilizzate le mani di un'altra persona. Gli unici due episodi in cui è possibile individuare la mancanza del dito medio destro sono Catspaw e The Trouble with Tribbles.
