LeVar Burton è nato a Landsthul, Germania Ovest, il 16 febbraio 1957.

Dopo aver vinto una borsa di studio alla University of Southern California, ha iniziato a frequentare il corso di laurea in arte drammatica. Durante il secondo anno di corso è stato scelto per interpretare il ruolo del giovane Kunta Kinte nello sceneggiato televisivo Roots (Radici), ruolo per il quale ha ottenuto un Emmy ed è divenuto famoso in tutto il mondo.

Tra i lavori televisivi ricordiamo A Root Christmas: Kunta Kinte's Gift in cui hanno recitato anche Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew e Tim Russ.

Burton è anche produttore ed è presidente della società Eagle Nation Films.

Con Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes e Michael Dorn ha inoltre aiutato Brent Spiner nella realizzazione dell'album di quest'ultimo, Yellow Eyes is Back, prestando la sua voce ai cori dei diversi brani.
